ART IN THE TRADITION OF THE MASTERS.
While the study of art offered through the public education system might fulfill artists' creative expressions, it often isn't until later that art students realize they are severely hampered by the lack of a solid foundation developed by learning to think as an artist, see as an artist, and mind/eye/hand coordination skills.
The thinking skills, artistic seeing, intuitive understanding, and the mastery of the craft of oil painting that is required to be able to produce art in the tradition of the Masters are not subjects conducive to the public school grading system! However, the current demand for, and renaissance of beauty and realism in art has led many artists who wish to make a career in fine art to search for other choices for their art education.
The ARTIST'S ATELIER answers this need with a focus on basic thinking skills for artists, and awareness of the distinct functions of the Right Brain and Left Brain in art. You'll learn how put both sides of the brain to their highest possible use. You learn how to recognize your artistic intuitive impulses, as well as the intellect's efforts to lead your true artistic thinking "down the garden path".
This is called Intuitive Thinking, and all other artistic skills to be learned at THE ARTIST'S ATELIER, such as seeing as an artist, mind/eye/hand coordination, understanding and using the principles of art, the medium of oil paint, mastery of oil painting techniques, etc. flow forth from intuitive awareness and correct thinking techniques. In this way students at the Atelier learn to paint beautifully, regardless of the subject, in the style of classical and contemporary realism. Students learn to think, see and paint in the tradition of the Masters!

WHAT YOU LEARN AND WHAT YOU WON'T LEARN
At THE ARTIST'S ATELIER you'll learn about the importance of painting a concept, you'll learn about composition, value and color relationships, color theory, how to paint form, the atmosphere, the qualities of light, and the fine points on how make things look real. You'll learn how to see truthfully, objectively, and with understanding. You'll learn many oil painting techniques and why and how to use them in a painting (click on Class Schedules for details of these techniques).
What you won't learn at THE ARTIST'S ATELIER is how to memorize rules, or "method" painting, and you won't get "canned" or vague answers to your questions.
You will not be learning to paint by acquiring information, which is an intellectual thing that is static and dead-end. But you will experience a growth in understanding, which is an intuitive thing that is alive, creative and open-ended.
We do not approve of copying or painting-along-with a teacher. That is because just matching your canvas to a photo or painting-along requires no thinking or understanding on the part of the student. Copying is a mindless endeavor and result-oriented, not in any way conducive to learning. The attention is shifted away from the student's thinking to merely duplicating the appearance of a picture or mimicking every move the teacher makes. A work of art cannot be made this way!
Creating a work of art - a painting - is process-oriented. Here, the attention is shifted to what takes place in the student's mind, where the student learns to UNDERSTAND painting.
Intuitive Thinking as the foundation for the training of fine artists is not taught anywhere but at THE ARTIST'S ATELIER.
